Dimensions of Teacher Development is a course beyond methodology, and it covers the key concepts of English language teaching as a professional and various dynamics of teacher development. It also enables them to design and deliver training sessions. Thus, the course aims at producing professionally competent English language teachers and trainers.

šThis course is designed to develop their proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing. It also intends to equip them with knowledge of vocabulary needed for academic purpose. Readings in English Part-I is an advanced level reading course which builds on Interdisciplinary Readings (Eng. Ed 517) of the first semester. The course has eight units. It consists of advanced academic texts, which are organized under various themes, namely Education, Literature, Art and Culture, Contemporary Issues, Human Conditions, while literary texts organized under major genres of literature. Both types of texts expose the students to content knowledge and strengthen their linguistic resources useful for communication to the wider readership. Phonetics and Phonology

This course explores speech sounds as physical entities (phonetics) and linguistic units (phonology). In viewing sounds as physical elements, the focus of this course is on articulatory description, types of movements and configurations of the vocal tract to produce sounds in languages. The course aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills required to produce and analyze both segmental and supra-segmental features of language in general and English in particular. The course, then, focuses on dealing with different theories of phonology and their importance, phonological processes in English, and formulation of different phonological rules. Finally, there is a discussion on English phonology in detail and Nepali phonology in brief along with the techniques and activities of teaching English pronunciation.

This course aims at exposing the students to the theoretical foundations in Second Language Acquisition (SLA). The course also engages the students in the SLA research. The course consists of four units. The first unit presents the fundamental concepts of SLA and related disciplines. The second unit exposes the students to the various approaches of SLA including the universal grammar and non –language factors. The third unit presents the overview of different theories and models of SLA. The fourth unit introduces the students to the SLA research and language teaching.

Second Language Acquisition: Theories and Research

This course aims at exposing the students to the theoretical foundations in Second Language Acquisition (SLA). The course also engages the students in the SLA research. The course consists of four units. The first unit presents the fundamental concepts of SLA and related disciplines. The second unit exposes the students to the various approaches of SLA including the universal grammar and non –language factors. The third unit presents the overview of different theories and models of SLA. The fourth unit introduces the students to the SLA research and language teaching.

Phonetics and Phonology

This course explores speech sounds as physical entities (phonetics) and linguistic units (phonology). In viewing sounds as physical elements, the focus of this course is on articulatory description, types of movements and configurations of the vocal tract to produce sounds in languages. The course aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills required to produce and analyze both segmental and supra-segmental features of language in general and English in particular. The course, then, focuses on dealing with different theories of phonology and their importance, phonological processes in English, and formulation of different phonological rules. Finally, there is a discussion on English phonology in detail and Nepali phonology in brief along with the techniques and activities of teaching English pronunciation.

Besides orienting students to basic theories of effective communication, the course also includes a practicum component in that students towards the end of the semester will have submit a completed writing portfolio that includes a range of writing assignments such as business correspondences, business report, and a dossier for job application. The course follows the seminar model of classroom teaching, in which students participate in in-class discussions and presentations.
