Critical Readings in English is a course designed to read critically and write creatively. Thematically organized, this course integrates content knowledge with the higher order thinking skills such as logical reasoning, critical appreciation and synthesizing through reading and writing. It is divided into eight different contemporary themes, namely Diversity, Technology and Education; Globalization and Environment; Travel, Sports and Health; Gender and Equality; Motivation and Inspiration, and Wit and Humor.  Each unit draws on the authentic texts from varied sources such as academic, philosophical, travel, literary books, print and electronic media.

Dimensions of Teacher Development is a course beyond methodology, and it covers the key concepts of English language teaching as a professional and various dynamics of teacher development. It addresses the fundamentals of teacher development such as beliefs, maxims, and identities. The course also discusses the second language teacher education and makes an attempt to empower the students to operationalize various teacher learning models and approaches. It also enables them to design and deliver training sessions. Thus, the course aims at producing professionally competent English language teachers and trainers.

 General Objectives

The general objectives of this course are as follows:

·         To make students familiar with the basic concepts of English teaching and teacher development;

·         To acquaint them with the fundamentals of teacher development;

·         To help the students link various learning theories with ELT teaching situations;

·         To provide students with the concept and skill in using the various teacher learning models and teachers’ roles;

·         To enable the students design and deliver training sessions.


General English I
Course categories

šThis course is designed to develop their proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing. It also intends to equip them with knowledge of vocabulary needed for academic purpose. The course includes listening, speaking, reading and writing components.  The listening, speaking and reading components deal with a wide variety of carefully selected materials. They include, among other things, informative passages on contemporary and critical issues. The writing part includes materials geared to developing various writing skills required for effective communication on matters of general and academic interests.

Readings in English Part I
Course categories

Readings in English Part-I is an advanced level reading course which builds on Interdisciplinary Readings (Eng. Ed 517) of the first semester. The course has eight units. It consists of advanced academic texts, which are organized under various themes, namely Education, Literature, Art and Culture, Contemporary Issues, Human Conditions, while literary texts organized under major genres of literature. Both types of texts expose the students to content knowledge and strengthen their linguistic resources useful for communication to the wider readership. The course presents the best of authentic academic and literary texts by the prominent authors from diverse geo-cultural and other relevant backgrounds. The course seeks to explore the cross-disciplinary links and their relevance to the contemporary world.

This course provides students with the key tools and strategies necessary to conduct academic research in English and write research-based papers after a thorough immersion into the processes from topic selection to library search and finally to drafting that agrees with the requirements of the MLA style-sheet and the standards of research in the discipline of English literature.
