This foundation course is designed to orient students with fundamental concepts of language and linguistics, including:

  • Distinctions between language vs. communication
  • Different levels and varieties of language (dialect, register, idiolect, etc.)
  • Branches of linguistics: theoretical vs. applied, synchronic vs. diachronic, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, neurolinguistics, computational linguistics, etc.
  • Linguistic notions like langue vs. parole, competence vs. performance, prescriptive vs. descriptive grammar, paradigmatic vs. syntagmatic relations
  • Application of linguistic theories in language teaching
